Today I found this strange piece of pottery on a site producing finds from the roman up until the late 19th century.
This piece is, as you can see, characterized by cut row of peaks followed by a line of chip carvings. The ware is made of orange clay.

Dein Fundbeleg erinnert mich an die Randpartien römischer Räucherkelche, die im Bereich von Hausaltären, im religiören Ritus und auch in Bestattungen eine Rolle spielten. Sie sind immer gelblich bis orangefarbig oxydierend gebrannt!

HI Thomas, thank you for your reply. Thats what I thought too, but the rim is quite strange, isn't it? I have seen quite a lot of these vessels, but none of them showed this rim.

Das ist tatsächlich keine übliche Randbildung! Diese Form ist mir aber aus Rom bekannt .... doch habe ich leider keine Literatur dazu ....
Ich kann mir auch die Sonderform eines Gefäßes für den Mithraskult vorstellen, auch wenn Dein Fundstück nicht glasiert ist! Hoch interessant auf jeden Fall!!!!! :winke:

I do not share your opinion, because a glazed roman vessel not necessarily has to be connected with the Mithras cult. Most of the vessels found in mithraic temples throughout the German provinces are not glazed (some of them only are painted).
Die glasierte Keramik in Beziehung zum Mithraskultur kenne ich aus dem Rheinland und dann auch mit figürlichen Appliktaionen (z.B. Bornheim)....
und vollkommen zutreffend finden sich glasierte Keramiken an anderen Orten auch in anderen Zusammenhängen, wie z.B. grün und bräunlich glasierte römische Warenarten, hier im Rheinland in Krefeld-Gellep usw. !!!
Und umgekehrt sind nicht alle Keramiken in kultischen Fundzusammenhängen glasiert!!!! :kopfkratz:

Thank you for the additional informations, I only know unglazed pottery from mithraic cult sites (here in Upper Germany).
In each case, the pottery sherd I have found is quite unusual!

Ich hätte auch sehr gerne etwas zu dem Fragment gesagt, aber leider bin ich da mal sprachlos, und habe noch nichts vergleichbares gesehen. :heul: :nono: :heul:
In the meantime, the piece has turned out to be a fragment of a Räucherkelch (as Thovalo has already suggested). The closest parallels to it were found in roman settlements along the Danube (Pannonia Superior) and date to the late 2nd century AD.

Maybe produced by an Danubian Potter who was Member of a roman legion ?!
